Rain ended the 3rd Annual FIU 7 on 7 Air Attack unfortunately just before the major part of the tournament was going to begin Sunday afternoon, but for a day and half, we got to enjoy some good football action, prepping us for the upcoming high school football season.

Teams came to compete from all around South Florida to see what they have, skill position wise, going into the upcoming football season. Some may have found themselves to be disappointed. Some went away feeling real good about their chances this season.

Then again, there were JV teams competing, facing off against Varsity teams, something that will certainly help them get better.

Premier contenders in the different classifications this season included Pahokee, which is expected to be a top-notch team in Class 2B, Miami Central, which is expected to go deep into the playoffs once again this season, American Heritage-Delray, which was the Class 1A state runner-up and will be excellent again in Class 1A, and South Dade, which will shock numerous teams this season who decide to overlook the Bucs.

The round robin finished with American Heritage and Pahokee leading the way with 6-0 records. Central was 3rd in round robin play at 5-1, losing by one point to Dunbar out of Fort Myers, followed by Lely, Hollywood Hills and Miami High.

Unfortunately, when the battles were getting good and the camp was down to the top 16 teams, the clouds erupted and the rest of the camp had to be cancelled because the rains simply didn’t let up.

South Florida players to watch out for at the camp: Charlie Jones, RB, South Dade; Clayton Johnson, FS, Central; Antoin Smith, RB, Pahokee; Julo Messier, WR, South Dade; Jerry Mingo, QB, South Dade; Darin Baldwin, FS, South Dade; Gary Cribbs, WR, Central; Marcus Williams, WR, Central; Webster Williams, LB, Gulliver Prep; Reynolds Cantave, RB, Varela; Mike Jenner, WR, Varela; Robert Sanchez, LB, Varela.
